Most people think of Tylenol as a safe and harmless drug, but study after study reveals that it’s not necessarily so. In some doses, acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol products, is harmless. But the amount recommended by Tylenol bottles does not necessarily fall within the limits if harmless. Furthermore, when the product is manufactured improperly, it may contain more acetaminophen that its label claims. And unfortunately, the margin between safe and not safe is relatively narrow. Accidental overdosings are far too common. An estimated 500 deaths and 50,000 emergency room visits result from Tylenol overdose each year, and at least half of those are considered accidental or unintentional. People may believe Tylenol is safe because it’s so easy to come by, it requires no prescription, it’s very popular, and it’s made in versions for babies and children. But Tylenol liver failure lawsuits are showing us that death from acute liver failure is a reality of the substance. In fact, Tylenol ingestion is the leading cause of acute liver failure in this country.
